Bible Timeline: How to get the `Big Picture` on Salvation History

cover Some people have made resolutions to read through the entire Bible in one year. Reading books like Genesis and Exodus are engaging, but oftentimes one gets bogged down in books like Leviticus and never make it through the rest of the Bible.

During the time he was a Protestant minister, Jeff Cavins discovered an effective way of reading the Bible. It kept the story moving, it kept him interested, and it gave him the "big picture" on salvation history.

Following is a list of the main historical books of the Bible in chronological order. Reading them as indicated (from top to bottom) will help give you the "big picture" on salvation history - how God worked through and upon human history (as He still does) in order to bring about our salvation.

Once these have been read through a few times, you can go back and start reading other books of the Bible that were written about the same time as the corresponding historical book. This will help give you the context of the historical situation inwhich the book was written. For instance, the Psalms were written during the times depicted in 2 Samuel when David was becoming (and became) the ruler of Israel.

Genesis (History of the Early World/The Patriarchs)
Exodus (Israel in Egypt)
Numbers (Israel wandering in the Desert)
Joshua (Conquest of Canaan)
Judges (Settling of Canaan)
1 & 2 Samuel (United Kingdom)
1 & 2 Kings (Divided Kingdom/The Exile)
Ezra (The Return/Rebuilding the Temple)
Nehemiah (Rebuilding the Walls of Jerusalem/Reform in the Temple)
1 Maccabees (The Fight for Religious Freedom)
Luke (Jesus the Messiah)
Acts (The Church)
